light columns

While down on Wilshire the other night for the Berlin Wall shenanigans, I got the chance to check out Chris Burden's "Urban Light" sculpture that marks the new entrance plaza to LACMA. Urban Light is somewhere between a forest and roman collonade, created out of 202 restored lampposts from various communities in an around Los Angeles. In the 20's, it was common for cities and neighborhoods to design their own streetlights as a form of civic marker. Burden began collecting them accidentally after stumbling across a couple at the Rose Bowl Flea Market. It was much later before he began to see their future as a piece of art that now helps mark LACMA's new opening to the streetscape that it had once only walled itself off from.
