ironclad
I've been getting a lot of hits on the blog the last couple weeks from people searching "Hermosa Beach Ironman". For those that don't know, its one of my favorite events of the year. For more than 25 years, a few hundred men and women brave sand and surf and suds by running a mile, paddling a mile, and then downing a six pack. The first to hold in the six pack without ralphing wins. Not your typical Iron Man. Its actually a surprisingly good-natured event that offers a glimpse of the traditional surfer side Hermosa - something thats harder to find anymore among the cheesy McMansions and plastic surgery. The event isn't officially listed or publicized anywhere, so I contacted one of the organizers to see if I should publish the info. He said sure, the more the merrier. The 2008 event will be in the same location as last year. Anyone wishing to enter should meet around Manhattan Ave and 29th Street between 9-10am; those wishing just to view the spectacle should look for the group around 30th Place on the beach around 10-11am. Remember, this is a fun, homegrown event. Don't expect high levels of organization or precise times. And if you come, bring a good attitude. Its a fun way to start your fourth and be a part of one of Hermosa's longest standing traditions.
