▸ VIDEO | NEWSCAST STUDIO GRAPHICS | KTLA-TV5 LOS ANGELES

The center video wall for KTLA’s newscast studio was designed as an evergreen backdrop for all newscasts and dayparts, using the station’s signature 5 logo as an oversized graphic element with a dual visual reading. In close anchor shots, the enlarged curves appear as abstract graphic shapes, while in wide shots of the studio, they resolve into the recognizable station logo. Monochromatic blue video imagery incorporates silhouettes of the downtown Los Angeles skyline and Hollywood’s Capitol Records Building, with the imagery arranged both within and around the oversized 5 to create a visually unified composition. Subtle movement from swaying palm trees and passing traffic adds a natural sense of motion, while animated traveling accents of the signature 5 shape and across gold KTLA letterform outlines reinforce the station branding. Geometric square patterns provide additional movement and texture, carefully positioned to avoid competing with the anchors or on-screen graphics.

A complementary system of story-specific graphics extends the same visual language to the studio’s vertical monitor displays. Using a consistent format of photography and headlines, these graphics function much like traditional over-the-shoulder news graphics, presenting topical stories across the new monitor arrangement. Shared geometric elements, color treatments, and graphic details connect the formats to the center video wall, modernizing the studio presentation while maintaining continuity with KTLA’s previously existing news graphics package.
